New York Times fails math and basic tax collecting courses

August 14, 2008

On Tuesday, I saw a headline at the New York Times Web site, Study tallies corporations not paying income tax. This type of story is right up our ally since our readers know that corporations don’t pay taxes; people do. I didn’t get to research the story on Tuesday, but Power Line just provided a kick in the head tonight and reminded me about it.

It turns out that Lynnley Browning and editors at the Times can’t understand basic logic. They figured since two out of three corporations in the study did not pay any taxes, they might as well take the total gross receipts of two-thirds of the companies and assume that 35 percent of that should be tax going to the feds.

They calculated that the government was being cheated out of $875 billion. Idiots. Read more

Los Angeles really goes over deep end - demands office space for day laborers

August 14, 2008

Imagine this. You own a business on a street where a illegal aliens tend to congregate. Illegal aliens - and probably some U.S. citizens - hang out there in hopes of someone driving by and offering them a few hours of work.

These gathering places have developed from coast to coast. Since many of these day laborers work construction and landscape jobs, they tend to hang out near big-box retailers like Home Depot and Lowes.

Now imagine your town passing an ordinance that requires you - the law abiding business owner - to construct a building that provides shelter, bathrooms, trash cans, drinking water, Internet access, English tutoring, free long distance calls, a copy machine and a Western Union office to the day laborers. The liberal education syndicate

August 14, 2008

I’m using syndicate to imply a negative connotation. Here at Conservative247 we try our best to pass along information that is educational. Generally, it’s no holds barred when it comes to providing lessons about what defines conservative concepts here in the United States.

If you have not added Walter E. Williams to your reading list, you really should. Yesterday’s syndicated column - this time using syndicate in the mass media distribution way - brings Williams back to one of his top issues; black education.

Black schools in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore developed top-notch graduates including doctors, lawyers, civil rights leaders, military commanders and a Supreme Court justice; all prior to the 1950s. Read more

Update: Hartford city council approves sanctuary city ordinance

August 13, 2008

The open borders advocates - who not only welcome illegal aliens but encourage them to steal public services - have almost won another battle. The Hartford City Council passed an ordinance last night - written about last month here at Conservative247 - that bars the Hartford Police Department from inquiring about immigration status.

I say almost won since Hartford’s mayor, Eddie Perez, has not signed the ordinance into law yet. There is still time to get your point of view heard. Read more

Following moral compass critical for leadership

August 8, 2008

John Edwards - former senator, vice presidential, and presidential candidate - has been caught like a deer in the headlights. He’s admitted to having an affair for a short period in 2006 with Rielle Hunter after saying no, no, no for awhile now. Listening to reporters this evening on Fox News, the sentiment was pretty consistent. Everybody felt pretty bad.

How can you not feel bad for the Edwards family? The people who knew about the affair - including Edwards’ wife Elizabeth - were trying to keep it a quiet and private. Although nobody on TV was willing to attack Edwards for lying, sweeping this type of information under the rug and avoiding reporting on it all together may pose an opportunity for bad people to bribe those in public office.
