Supreme Court Affirms Heller – There is an Individual Right

June 26, 2008

Normally, this site does not cover breaking news, but for the DC v Heller case, we’re making an editorial decision to post information as soon as it is released. We’ll provide the full PDF of the decision – and the dissenting opinion if there is one – here on the site.

SCOTUSblog has the Cover it Live feed going right now. Best bet might be to click here to catch it.

9:58 a.m. Three opinions set for today, and Heller will not be first. We should know the decision right away, but the particulars will take a few minutes.
10:05 a.m. Per SCOTUSblog, Heller will be last.
10:12 a.m. Heller affirmed. Vote was 5-4, Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm.

As we wait for the actual opinion in PDF format, one comment. I expected 6-3 or even 7-2, but 5-4 really bugs me.

Opinion is here – this is a link on the Conservative247.org site just in case other news sites are overwhelmed. It is 157 pages.

Obsessions of Another Kind

June 25, 2008

In the Boston Globe June 24, H.D.S Greenway writes Obsessing About Iran, in which he refers to the Bush White House as “…talking itself into attacking Iran”, Robert Gates at Defense as “…not the attack dog that”…”Donald Rumsfeld was”, Dick Cheney as “…our supernationalist vice president” and president Bush as retaining “…his messianic streak”.

The author managed to get all of that in before explaining what he’s writing against and why. I hesitate to take issue with H.D.S. Greeway as I start out behind one initial, but here goes. Read more

$4 Gas – Who Hurts, Who Wins?

June 25, 2008

The buyers are hurting you’d say, and you’d be right. But oddly enough so are many of the sellers. Yep, the gas station owners. Some are hurting to the point of going out of business.

The why of this, revolves around a business model that sets it’s profit in cents per gallon (about 8 to 12) and is limited in range by the need to compete with the station across the way. Nothing will prompt a fill-up at the competition faster than a sign with a lower price per gallon. Read more

Brits Consider Ban on Wigs, Dark Sunglasses

June 24, 2008

And you think that I’m making up that headline? Okay, I am making it up, but if the police in Yorkshire are going around asking Pub owners to have patrons remove their headgear, what’s next? You see, the coppers want everyone to remove their hats so the troublemakers in the lot can be easily recognized by all the CCTV cameras. Read more

Brazilian Official Lies About Lost Tribe – Media Soaks Up Story

June 24, 2008

A Brazilian official – working for the Brazilian Indian Protection Agency – has been caught creating a news story to promote an environmental cause. There is nothing new here, the drive-by-media loves a story that fits the liberal agenda.

In this case, a government official took photographs during an expedition flight over the Amazon, documenting Indians from one of the “world’s last uncontacted tribes”. The problem is that the tribe had been monitored for decades and the environmentalist lied to promote his “don’t cut down the trees” agenda.

News organizations fell for the story, with out any fact checking at all. Gee, that never happens.
