Iran tests new weapon, can close Straight of Hormuz - US tests weapon, can reopen Straight - and make it wider

August 4, 2008

More posturing from the Iranian dictator-at-large. Six world powers simply asked Iran to stop enriching uranium. They won’t stop, and this is the set up to test the new president of the United States.

We might have some more rhetoric babbled from the United Nations over the next few months - with strong words that again demand that Iran stop messing with nukes - but nothing will happen until at least next spring when the new administration is in place. After all, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad knows that he’s safe; nobody has the guts to actually go forward with knocking his block off. Read more

Obama suggests international community buy off Iran

July 23, 2008

How else can you put it? When I first read the Reuters story, I thought that his position on Iran going nuclear sounded a lot like our current administration’s position on Iran going nuclear.

During his visit to Israel, Obama spoke with a group of reporters and let them know - in no uncertain terms - that Iran becoming a nuclear power would be a “grave threat.” This international policy answer seems to come from the buy-them-off-at-any-price chapter. Read more

Pray to Allah or Else

June 29, 2008

In the Boston Globe, Foon Rhee recounts that Ralph Nader - independent candidate for president - told the Rocky Mountain News that Obama is trying to “talk white” and to appeal to “white guilt.”

White guilt. That’s a phrase used sparingly by the media, but is de rigueur for inclusion in any spoken or written sentence mentioning race on college and university campuses. That covers just about every sentence spoken or written on college and university campuses. Read more

Obsessions of Another Kind

June 25, 2008

In the Boston Globe June 24, H.D.S Greenway writes Obsessing About Iran, in which he refers to the Bush White House as “…talking itself into attacking Iran”, Robert Gates at Defense as “…not the attack dog that”…”Donald Rumsfeld was”, Dick Cheney as “…our supernationalist vice president” and president Bush as retaining “…his messianic streak”.

The author managed to get all of that in before explaining what he’s writing against and why. I hesitate to take issue with H.D.S. Greeway as I start out behind one initial, but here goes. Read more
