Compassionate conservatism equaled big government

We all knew it. Bush 43 tried to define his presidency by bringing new tone to Washington D.C., and called his politics compassionate conservatism. By reaching across the aisle and letting Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) write the No Child Left Behind in 2001, propping up the U.S. steel industry with tariffs in 2002, and dishing out billions in pork creatively identified as national defense spending, he failed conservatives around the country.

Follow the money - graft is everywhere

It’s not just Democrats. It’s not just Republicans. It’s politicians from all over the country - elected to serve small towns, big cities and the United States - who have bought into the FDR New Deal philosophy of government hook, line and sinker. That era defines the beginning of government involvement in almost every aspect of our lives. It is the root cause of the financial situation we are in now.

When government gets into everything, power players get to play games with graft, political corruption, quid pro quo. You get to hand out cash for favors. Unfortunately the cash comes directly from government budgets. Since even small town budgets are so huge these days, you can easily hide $85 grand or so.

FEMA cash flows to waterfront homeowners in Florida

For years, the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) has been handing out millions of dollars to homeowners all over the country to renovate homes. The idea is to help mitigate problems with future flooding; they want owners to raise homes higher off the ground.

Just in the the community of Madeira Beach, Florida - a barrier island to the east of St. Petersburg - FEMA has handed out grants totaling more than $3.6 million to homeowners since 1996. I’m sorry, but I have a problem with the federal government handing out cash to people who purchased homes three feet above sea level.
